Macular degeneration is an eye disease that affects the macula, or the central portion of the retina, which is in the inside back layer of the eye. The risk of developing this condition increases with age, which is why it is also known as age-related macular degeneration (AMD). It is most likely to occur after age 55, though it can develop earlier, according to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation (AMDF).
